She was only twenty-one, but she felt ancient, worn down by a life that had been too much, too soon. The system had released her, but it hadn’t prepared her. It had taught her to survive, but it hadn’t taught her how to live. The vastness of the city, once a symbol of opportunity, now felt like an infinite abyss, and Liz, standing on the precipice of her own adulthood, felt terrifyingly alone. The world had cast her out, and she was beginning to wonder if there was any shore at all to find.
