…As Silas’s voice boomed on, I slipped away from the fire, Pip and the moss-colored creature following close behind. The darkness of the woods swallowed us, a welcome cloak of obscurity. I led them to the hollowed-out log, my mind racing. Pip nudged my hand, his obsidian eyes filled with a silent question. I looked at the new creature, its fern-like fronds twitching nervously. It was a part of me, born from my hand, my imagination. And it was alive. The world, I was beginning to realize, was far stranger, and far more magical, than I had ever dared to draw. And I, Kevin, the boy who loved to sketch, was at the very heart of it.
