…Suddenly, a twig snapped behind us. My blood ran cold. Silas. I quickly scooped Pip into my arms, the stone clutched tight in my hand, and scrambled to hide behind a thicket of ferns. The emerald light from the box flickered and died, leaving only the pale moonlight. Silas’s gruff voice echoed through the trees, “Who’s there? Show yourself!” My breath hitched. Pip pressed his face against my neck, a silent plea. I knew, with a certainty that settled deep within my soul, that this stone, this box, and the magic that flowed through me, were all connected. And that Silas, with his fear and suspicion, was a danger I had yet to fully comprehend. The adventure had truly begun.
