…I laughed, the sound surprising me. It felt good. Light. “There are blackberries by the stream.” Pip’s ears perked up. “Now you’re speaking my language.” We started back through the woods together, the key warm in my pocket, the letter tucked against my heart. The trees whispered overhead, and for the first time in a long time, I felt like they were whispering secrets just for me. I didn’t know what the key would open. I didn’t know where the door was hidden, or what I’d find on the other side. But I knew one thing for certain. I was one step closer to my parents. And I wasn’t going to stop until I found them.
