…I was so focused on the decoding that I didn't hear the footsteps until they stopped directly behind me. A shadow fell across the page, and a voice I didn't recognize said, "That doesn't belong to you." I spun around, the journal slipping from my grasp. A man stood in the doorway, tall and thin, with eyes that held no warmth. He wore a dark suit and carried a leather briefcase, and he was staring at the manuscript on my desk as if it were a crime scene. "Who are you?" I managed. "Someone who's been looking for that book for a very long time," he said. "And I'll be taking it with me."
