…But before she left, she turned back. She looked at me, her eyes holding mine, and she said, "I'll be right outside, Leo. Take your time." Then she was gone. The door clicked shut behind her. Mr. Chen was talking, his voice a low murmur of legal advice and procedural warnings, but I wasn't listening. I was looking at the word on the paper, the smudged ink, the tear that had fallen. My hands were still trembling. But for the first time in hours, I felt something other than fear. I felt a crack in the wall. Small, barely visible, like the one near the ceiling. But it was there. And through it, I could see a sliver of light.
