…She didn't knock. She didn't say anything. She just watched. I looked away first. My fingers curled into fists behind my back. The handcuffs bit into my skin, and I let the pain ground me, let it pull me back from the edge of something I didn't want to name. A single tear traced a path down my cheek. I wiped it away with my shoulder, quick and hard, like it had never been there. But she saw. I knew she saw. And for the first time in months, I felt something other than anger. I felt hope. And it terrified me more than anything else.
