The Voice In My Head

…I hadn’t survived my childhood alone. I had survived because a part of me, the most vital, most loving part, had built a sanctuary within my own mind. A place where I was never truly alone. I closed the notebook, the worn leather cool beneath my fingertips. A faint smile, fragile and tear-streaked, touched my lips. I whispered into the vast, silent room, my voice thick with emotion, “Thank you for saving my life, Mia.” There was no answer. There never would be again. But for the first time since the surgery, the silence didn’t feel like an empty void. It felt like peace. It felt like goodbye.
