…They were led down a ramp, the concrete under their feet cold and unforgiving. This was a parking lot, they understood, but it descended, like a spiraling maw, deeper and deeper into the earth. The only illumination came from harsh, fluorescent lights that cast long, distorted shadows. Anya’s heart hammered against her ribs, each beat a frantic drum against the suffocating silence. This was no ordinary kidnapping. This was something organized, something deliberate, something terrifyingly calculated. The cheerful innocence of their Venetian adventure had been ripped away, replaced by a chilling, unknown dread. They were no longer tourists; they were prey.
