…Her family, at their wit’s end, made another drastic decision. They sent Kadja to an all-girls boarding school in Portland, Maine, called Catherine McAuley. They believed a completely new environment, away from the familiar haunts and the ingrained prejudices, might finally break the cycle. But moving, as they had learned, didn’t help anything. It was as if a persistent spirit, an unseen entity, wouldn't leave her alone, following her from place to place, its dark tendrils weaving themselves into the fabric of her life, no matter how far they ran.
