…Things just kept getting worse. Kadja was a loner, her attempts at friendship met with fear and ridicule. The bullying, the taunts of "freak," "witch," and worse, followed her like a persistent echo. The guidance counselor, seeing Kadja's isolation and the growing despair in her eyes, suggested she attend Saint Stephen's High School for grade 10. But the same things happened. The fear, the whispers, the ostracization. Kadja would hide, her only solace found in the hushed stillness of the old Revolutionary Torrey Cemetery, instead of enduring the cruelty of the classroom. The weight of the dead, it seemed, was not just in the houses she inhabited, but within her very soul.
