…As they walked out of the practice room, leaving the lingering scent of sweat and unspoken confessions behind, Kyungmin couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted irrevocably. Shinyu’s confession, and Hanjin’s seemingly flawless rejection, had been the first stone cast into a still pond. The ripples were just beginning to spread, and Kyungmin had a chilling premonition that the surface of their lives was about to be violently disturbed. He looked at Hanjin, walking beside him, his profile serene, his gaze fixed ahead. And for the first time, Kyungmin wondered if the puppet master himself was starting to feel the tug of strings he hadn't intended to pull.

The apartment was unnaturally quiet, the sort of silence that follows a storm. Hanjin and Kyungmin slipped inside, the door clicking shut behind them, shutting out the fluorescent glare of the hallway. The others were already gone, scattered to their rooms or out into the Seoul night to escape the tension pressing down on all of them.

Hanjin set his bag down with careful precision. His every movement seemed orchestrated, yet there was something brittle in the way his fingers lingered on the zipper, a hesitance he’d never allow anyone else to see. Kyungmin hovered in the entryway, watching him. For a moment neither of them spoke, the weight of Shinyu’s words hanging between them like a third presence.

Finally, Hanjin straightened, his face turned away. "You don’t have to worry, Kyungmin," he said lightly, too lightly. "This will pass. Shinyu will get over it. They always do."

He didn’t sound convinced. Kyungmin could hear the faintest tremor in his tone, an unfamiliar note that had nothing to do with confidence. Hanjin’s façade had always fascinated him—the way he glided through the world untouched, untouchable. But now, standing in the half-lit living room, Kyungmin saw the hairline cracks spidering through the porcelain.

Kyungmin stepped closer, reducing the distance between them to a little more than a breath. He searched Hanjin’s face, trying to find the truth beneath those careful expressions. "Are you sure you’re alright?" he asked softly. Not the question of a friend, but of someone who knew what to look for—someone who had chosen, for reasons he did not fully understand, to stay by Hanjin’s side no matter what.

For a second, Hanjin’s mask fractured. His eyes closed, lashes brushing his cheeks as he exhaled a slow, deliberate breath. When he spoke again, the voice was almost sincere. "I don’t know what I am."

It wasn’t an admission so much as a surrender. The silence between them grew taut, electric. Kyungmin’s hand hovered at his side, uncertain. The urge to reach out, to touch the truth, was almost overwhelming. But he held back. He had seen how quickly Hanjin could retreat behind his armor.

"You don’t have to pretend with me," Kyungmin whispered, moving just close enough that he could feel the warmth radiating from Hanjin’s skin. "Not anymore."

Something flickered in Hanjin’s gaze, vulnerable and fierce all at once. His lips parted as if to speak, but the words tangled in his throat. The air between them crackled—not just with the threat of something breaking, but with the possibility of something entirely new being born from the wreckage.

Just as the tension reached its breaking point, a sharp knock shattered the moment. The sound was abrupt, jarring in the quiet. Both Hanjin and Kyungmin froze, eyes locked on the door. Another knock—louder, more insistent. Then a voice, muffled but unmistakable:

"Hanjin, open up. I know you’re in there."

Shinyu.

The name circled through Hanjin’s mind like a warning. He shot a look at Kyungmin, eyes wide with a wary intensity. The fragile honesty between them flickered, threatened to vanish in an instant. Outside, Shinyu’s silhouette waited, a shadow stretching across the threshold. The air in the apartment went razor-sharp, every breath suddenly dangerous.

Hanjin took one step toward the door, every nerve on edge, the memory of that confession pulsing hot and insistent in his chest. Kyungmin’s voice barely reached him—quiet, but full of everything Hanjin couldn’t say himself.

"You don’t have to let him in."

But the decision pressed in on Hanjin from all sides, urgent and inescapable. The next move was his—whatever he chose, the game would change.
