Above him, the ceiling of the pocket dimension stretched into darkness—or into something that wore darkness like a disguise, the way his flame now wore smallness. The coal pulsed. Steady. Patient. Warm. Somewhere beyond the membrane, the thing that had opened one eye was no longer opening just one. It was considering things. Calculating distances.
