…As the first hint of gray began to stain the eastern horizon, we crossed the county line. The sign, illuminated by the faint predawn light, read “Welcome to Oakhaven.” It was a small town, a place I’d never been, a place where no one knew us. It felt like the edge of the world, and yet, it felt like the beginning of everything. I glanced in the rearview mirror one last time. The darkness was giving way to light, painting the sky in hues of soft pink and orange. It was a sunrise, a promise of a new day, a new beginning. And for the first time in a long time, I dared to believe that maybe, just maybe, we could find our way to it.
