…“Just a boy,” I agreed, and I meant it. The intense, all-consuming crush felt a little less powerful now that I wasn’t letting it get between us. Katie reached over and picked up a stray gummy worm from the floor. “Want to share?” I took it, and we both popped one into our mouths, the sweet, artificial flavor a welcome contrast to the bitterness we’d been tasting. The silence that settled between us now was different. It was comfortable, familiar, the kind of silence that only best friends could share. The sleepover wasn’t ruined. It had just taken a detour through Escalation Station and, thankfully, found its way back to the right track.
