…"I didn't say that!" I retorted, my own voice cracking. "I'm just saying maybe you're overreacting. It's just a song, Katie. And it's just James." The words were out, careless and cruel, and the moment they were spoken, I knew I’d made a terrible mistake. Katie’s eyes widened, hurt flashing across her face. "Just James?" she whispered, her voice suddenly small and shaky. "He’s not ‘just James’ to me, Sophia. And I thought he wasn’t ‘just James’ to you either." She looked at me, her gaze searching, and then she turned abruptly and walked out of the bathroom, leaving me standing there with the smell of toothpaste and the bitter taste of regret.
