…“I think I want to go home,” she whispered, her voice thick with tears. She didn’t wait for an answer, just slipped out, closing the door softly behind her. The silence in the room was deafening. The cheerful unicorn movie now seemed garish and mocking. My popcorn lay forgotten, a silent testament to the fun that had evaporated. I stared at the closed door, the weight of my words crushing me. I’d wanted to win, to be the one who knew James best, and in doing so, I’d lost something far more precious. My best friend. The sleepover, the pizza, the movies – it all felt hollow and meaningless now. The magic was gone, replaced by a cold, empty ache in my chest.
