…“I can’t do this right now,” she mumbled, her voice choked with tears. She walked towards the door, her shoulders hunched. “Katie, wait!” I called out, a desperate plea. But she didn’t stop. She opened the door and slipped out, leaving me alone in the suddenly silent room, the fairy lights twinkling mockingly. The pillow fort felt like a monument to our fractured friendship. The movie played on, its cheerful dialogue now a painful reminder of the joy that had evaporated. My heart ached with a loneliness far deeper than any I’d ever known. We had a crush. And it had broken us.
