…The cozy fort, our sanctuary of secrets, had become a place of hurt and misunderstanding. The comfortable silence was gone, replaced by the ragged sound of our breathing and the echo of angry words. I stared at Katie, my best friend, and saw not just the girl who loved sleepovers and pizza, but a rival. And she saw me, I knew, as someone who was being unfair, someone who was trying to control her feelings. The pillow fort, meant for sharing secrets, had instead become a monument to a secret that had driven a wedge between us. The warmth of the night had suddenly gone cold.
