…As the first hints of dawn began to paint the sky outside my window with soft shades of pink and gold, Katie finally drifted off to sleep, her breathing deep and even. I lay awake for a little longer, a sense of peace settling over me. Our friendship, like a sturdy tree, had weathered a storm. It had bent, but it hadn’t broken. And in its branches, new understanding had taken root. We knew now that crushes were like fleeting butterflies, beautiful and exciting, but friendships, true friendships like ours, were the solid ground beneath our feet. And that was something far more precious, and far more lasting.
