…The tension that had been suffocating us all evening began to dissipate, replaced by the familiar comfort of our shared space. The glow-in-the-dark stars seemed to twinkle a little brighter now, friendly witnesses to our reconciliation. The wind outside picked up again, a gentle lullaby this time, and the rustling leaves sounded like soft applause. We lay there for a long time, not talking, just breathing, the quiet filled with the unspoken understanding that had always been the bedrock of our friendship. James was still a thought, a whisper in the back of our minds, but he was no longer the storm. He was just a boy, and we were Sophia and Katie, best friends, and that was more than enough.
