…We lay back down in our sleeping bags, the silence no longer heavy and awkward, but soft and comforting. The glow-in-the-dark stars seemed to twinkle a little brighter now. I closed my eyes, and this time, sleep didn’t feel so far away. I knew there would be more sleepovers, more movies, more secrets. And maybe, just maybe, there would be more chances to talk to James. But whatever happened, I knew one thing for sure: Katie would be there, and that was all that really mattered. The night was still young, but the storm had passed, leaving behind the quiet calm of a friendship that had weathered its first real test and emerged stronger than before.
