…With a final surge of desperate energy, I clambered out of the opening, pulling the grate shut behind me with a resounding clang. I stumbled onto the damp earth, gasping for air, my body trembling. Liam and Chloe were there, their faces etched with relief and fear. They had made it. We had made it. But as I looked back at the patch of ground where the grate lay, I knew it wasn't over. The silence of Site 39 had been broken, but its secrets, and its rage, would forever haunt us. The escape route had led us out, but the journey had changed us. And I had a sinking feeling that the Presence was still watching, waiting, from the darkness below.
