…The air was no longer sweet with anticipation, but heavy with a cloying sorrow. The Starfall, once a symbol of hope, now seemed to weep with them. And in the heart of that weeping light, Lyra felt a nascent spark of defiance. She might be naive, she might be afraid, but she would not stand by and watch her village be consumed by this creeping despair. The Starfall had always been a gift. This year, it felt like a curse. And Lyra, with a dawning sense of purpose that both terrified and exhilarated her, knew she had to find a way to break it. The whispered legends of ancient artifacts, of forgotten heroes, suddenly felt less like stories and more like a desperate plea.

Lyra clenched the garland in her fist, feeling the chill of dew-damp petals against her palm. Kael stood close, his jaw tight, eyes fixed on the corrupted sky. The air vibrated with the wailing of old grief and fresh fury, and the sickly threads that leashed the Starfall seemed to pulse in time with the villagers’ pain.

She could not bear to retreat indoors, not when Aeridor needed something braver from her. The old stories echoed in her mind—tales of those who had stepped forward when the world twisted wrong. She pressed a hand to her chest, grounding herself in the here and now, then turned to Kael. “We have to trace it. The darkness. If we can find the source, maybe we can break the hold it has on the Starfall.”

Kael hesitated only a heartbeat before nodding. "I’ll follow wherever you lead. But it’s dangerous, Lyra. Whatever is doing this—”

“—feeds on our pain,” she finished for him. The words left a sour taste in her mouth, but they cleared her focus. She glanced around the deserted square; even the moonlight seemed to shy away from the tainted starshine. A faint, tremulous glow trickled from the well beside her, pooling in the cracks between stones. It looked almost like a trail, as if the source of the corruption—and perhaps its answer—could be found by following that spectral thread.

A sudden crash rang out from her family’s cottage—the sound of glass shattering, followed by her father’s raised voice. Lyra felt torn: the urge to run to him, to protect her own, warred with the fierce certainty that the answer lay outside, in the deepening night.

Kael stepped between her and the well, his face pale but determined. “Lyra, if we’re going, we go together. But if you need to help your family, I’ll wait.”

A gust of wind tossed loose flower petals around their feet. Overhead, the corrupted Starfall pulsed, and Lyra felt a sharp stab of sorrow that was not entirely her own. For an instant, the pain eclipsed everything else. She caught herself on the well’s stone rim, ragged breath drawing the cold night into her lungs. It was like drowning in memories—not hers, but everyone’s. It clawed at her resolve, whispering that she was powerless, that heartbreak was inevitable.

But Kael’s hand, gentle and warm, closed over hers, anchoring her to life and light. Their eyes met in the gloom, and he managed a shaky smile. “We have to do something.”

The spectral glow at their feet flickered, as if urging her onward. From the cottage, another anguished cry broke the silence. Lyra’s heart hammered as she realized: if she stayed, she might save her father from immediate pain. But if she followed the ghostly trail, she might save them all.

The wind rose, carrying another surge of suffering through the village. Lyra staggered, her decision looming before her like the shadow at the heart of the Starfall. The darkness above seemed almost to beckon, challenging her to act before it was too late.
