…The guards’ voices abruptly cut off. Kelly heard shouts of surprise, followed by sounds of coughing and sputtering. "What is this?" the male guard’s voice boomed, muffled by the spores. "It’s… overwhelming!" the female guard gasped, her voice strained. "I can barely see!" Kelly didn't wait to hear more. Seizing the opportunity, she turned and ran, her small legs pumping furiously. She ran in the direction she felt the spaceship was, her heart a drumbeat of hope and fear. She ran with the memory of her mother’s words echoing in her mind: “Your will, Kelly, that’s your magic.” And for the first time, she truly believed it.
