…He set the glass down with a clatter, the sound echoing in the sudden silence. He looked at the map again, his finger no longer tracing a path, but hovering, uncertain. The cabin, his fortress, his secret prison, suddenly felt exposed. The years of silence, of assumed safety, seemed to dissipate like mist. He hadn’t gotten away with it. Not entirely. Because Sophie, even in her darkness, had remembered. And somewhere, out in the world, Mia might be remembering too. The thought was a cold, sharp shard of ice in his gut. He had thought he was alone with his secret, but perhaps, he was not.
