…Low. Resonant. Familiar. The sound of something vast moving through water. The displacement of tons of sea by something that displaced it deliberately, purposefully, with the intentionality of a being that chooses when and where to surface. Lyra moved to the shelf's edge. Looked down. In the water below, illuminated by the lighthouse beam as it swept past, something glowed. Not bioluminescence—the blue-green shimmer of plankton disturbed by motion. Something else. Something deeper. A golden light, warm and steady, rising through the dark water from the base of the cliff. The tenant was coming back. And it was bringing something with it.
