…It felt like a lifeline. As he walked with her towards the cottage, he glanced back, just for a fleeting moment, at the dark, distant shape of the house. It seemed smaller now, less menacing, its power diminished by the miles that separated them. The echo of his stepmother’s cold voice, the phantom chill of her disapproval, began to fade, replaced by the comforting warmth of the woman’s hand and the promise of a new beginning. The journey was far from over, he knew. There would be more challenges, more unknowns. But for the first time, Leo felt a flicker of true hope, a fragile flame in the vast darkness, and it was enough. He was free.
