The house would be quieter, the watchful eye of his stepmother temporarily absent. He looked at Doggy, who nudged his hand with his wet nose, his dark eyes filled with a silent, unwavering loyalty. He thought of Jax, of her quiet kindness, of the small wooden bird she had left for him, a tiny symbol of freedom. The fear was still there, a cold knot in his stomach, but it was now mingled with a fierce, desperate resolve. He would escape. He had to. The gilded cage was about to be tested.
