…As the riders turned and retreated into the mist, the courtyard erupted in a cheer that wasn't for a victory in war, but for the safety of our home. I looked at Kaelen, who was already marking the ledger with the details of the encounter. We were no longer fighting the war; we were outlasting it. "What's the next lesson, Headmaster?" Kaelen asked, closing the book. I looked up at the sky, clearing now, the clouds breaking to reveal a sliver of sun. "The next lesson is how to rebuild," I said. "We have the pages. Now, we build the reality."
