…Karim looked at her hand, then at her face. Her smile was warm and genuine. For the first time since he’d arrived in England, he felt a flicker of hope, a sense of possibility. He took her hand. It was small and warm, and it felt surprisingly safe. As they walked out of the den, hand in hand, the park no longer seemed quite so overwhelming. The other children’s laughter was still loud, but it didn’t sound as menacing. The unfamiliar trees didn't seem as tall and threatening. He was still Karim, the boy from Afghanistan, but now he was also Karim, the boy who had found a secret den and shared a piece of his home with a new friend. The adventure, he realized, was just beginning.
