…Lily’s frown softened. She stepped inside, her eyes taking in the hidden space. “Wow,” she breathed. “This is a cool den!” She looked at him, her gaze curious and kind. “Did you make this?” Karim shook his head. He pointed to the bushes, then mimed digging with his hands. He remembered the dry riverbeds, the secret forts. He looked at Lily, and for the first time, he didn't feel the crushing weight of fear. He felt a flicker of something else, something warm and hopeful. He pointed to himself, then made a sweeping gesture towards the park, and then back to the den. He looked at Lily, and with a surge of courage, he said, in his soft, hesitant voice, “Home.”

Lily’s face lit up, her blue eyes shining. She knelt beside Karim on the smooth stone, careful not to disturb the delicate branches above. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Sunlight drifted in through the leaves, painting golden patches on the ground. The sounds of laughter and play from the park faded to a distant hum, muffled by the safety of their little hideout.

Lily picked up a twig and drew a wobbly circle in the earth. "I never found a place like this before," she whispered. Her voice sounded as if she were afraid it might get lost in the quiet. She offered Karim a second twig. "Want to draw something?" she asked, her words slow and careful, trying not to rush him.

Karim took the twig, his hand trembling only slightly. He pressed it into the cool dirt and, with careful strokes, drew a mountain. Back home, the mountains had seemed close enough to touch, their snowy peaks bright even on the darkest days. Here, the land was flat, the horizon far away. But, for a moment, with Lily watching softly, Karim felt closer to those old heights. He finished his mountain and looked up. Lily smiled encouragingly, nodding as if she understood.

Outside, a distant shout startled a flock of pigeons into flight. Karim stiffened, a pang of worry flickering across his face. What if his mother came looking for him and could not see him here? What if the other children saw them in the den, and the laughter turned toward them? He pressed his fingers into his palm, trying to steady his breathing.

Lily must have noticed, because she scooted a little closer, her shoulder almost touching his. "It’s okay," she said quietly, her tone gentle. "We can go back, if you like. Or—" She hesitated, then added, "We could stay here together for a bit longer. Only if you want."

Karim looked down at the mountain he'd drawn, then at Lily’s nervous smile. He wanted to stay; the den felt safe, but the worry for his mother tugged at him. His heart beat a wild, anxious rhythm, caught between the safety of the den and the world outside.

Suddenly, footsteps thudded near the bushes. Two older boys passed, their feet crunching the grass. Karim shrank back, chest tight, afraid one of them would peek into the den. The taller boy stopped, glancing around. For a moment, Karim thought he’d been spotted. His hand gripped the stone beneath him. The boys’ voices were brash, loud, speaking quickly—English words tumbling one over the other, too fast to understand.

Lily held her breath. The boys moved on, not noticing the den after all. Relief swept over Karim, but the bubble of safety had been pierced. He met Lily’s eyes and saw the worry in them, the same flicker of fear he felt. The den was their secret place, but the outside world was always close.

A new voice called out, distant but familiar—his mother’s, strong and searching, floating over the hum of the park. Karim’s heart leapt. The moment hung suspended; he could run from the den and let his mother’s arms reassure him, or stay hidden for just a moment longer, sharing the secret sunlit space with Lily. Or perhaps, he could invite Lily to meet his mother at the edge of the park, and let two worlds begin to meet under the grey English sky.

The branches shook with a sudden gust of wind, scattering leaves across his mountain drawing. Karim looked from Lily, to the opening, to the world waiting outside, his next move charged with hope and uncertainty.
