…Rowan stood, and his chair scraped against the floor with a sound that seemed to satisfy Maya, as if it had been perfectly calibrated for the moment. He held out a hand toward Ashley, and she took it without hesitation. "One step," she said. "One step. Together." They walked to the door, past Maya's crooked floorboard, past the table where the tart plate sat empty, and into the afternoon light that was doing its best to pretend the world was simple. The door closed behind them. Maya picked up the plate. "They're going to be fine," she said, more to herself than to Michelle. "They already are," Michelle replied, turning a page. "They just don't know it yet."
