…She walked out. The door stuck. She pulled harder. It opened. Outside, the air was cold. The trees were dark shapes against the sky. She walked home alone, thinking about the present moment and all the ways we try to escape it. But she was still present. And that, she realized, was the only thing that mattered. Her phone buzzed. A text from Rowan: I'm sorry. For the seabirds. For everything. I'll tell you the truth tomorrow. She didn't reply. She looked at the sky. Somewhere, a bird was calling. It was probably a cormorant. Or it wasn't. She didn't know. And she was okay with that.
