She’ll get out, and you’ll be together again.” I looked at the keychain. The pink rabbit seemed to glow in the dim light. “I know.” But five years felt like a lifetime. And in the quiet of my cell, I counted the days, the hours, the minutes until I could see my mother again. The trial was over, but my story was not. I would endure. I would wait. And I would remember that love, even in the darkest times, was the only thing that could keep me going.
