…Kaelan stared at the dark slit in the mountain. It looked like a wound. “One more thing,” Lyra said, her voice dropping. “You won’t be alone in there. The mountain guards its secrets. And Malakor’s reach is long.” “I know.” Kaelan tightened his grip on his sword. “I’ll manage.” Lyra smiled, and it was the first warm thing he’d seen in days. “That’s what your father said, the day he walked into his own doom. Don’t make the same mistake.” She turned and walked away, leaving him at the mouth of the mountain. Kaelan took a breath. Then he stepped into the dark.
