…She didn’t know what this power was, or where it came from. She only knew that it was hers. And for the first time in her quiet, unassuming life, Elara felt a flicker of something more than fear. She felt a nascent strength, a desperate resolve. She was the last of her line, a lineage steeped in shadow and forgotten magic. And they had come to take it. But they would have to pry it from her cold, dead hands. The obsidian lineage, she realized with a terrifying certainty, was about to awaken. The quiet life was over.

Elara’s fingers closed around the stone, her palm tingling as the violet glow seeped into her skin. The narrow cottage seemed to shrink, the walls pressing inward with the presence of the two intruders. The first man stepped forward, the blade’s edge catching what little firelight remained. His cloak brushed the rag rug, silent as a shadow. His companion circled along the wall, trapping her between them and the cold hearth.

She raised the stone before her, its glow now casting sharp, frantic shadows across the men’s faces. Their eyes widened, though they did not falter. The air itself seemed to vibrate; dust and stray threads lifted from the floor, suspended in the glow’s strange gravity. Elara’s heart thundered. The whispers were no longer words—they were a presence, vast and old, filling her veins.

The first man spoke again, his voice softer but sure. “Come with us quietly, child. It is safer that way.”

Elara’s breath trembled. "Who are you? What do you want?" Her voice sounded strange, like it belonged to someone else.

The second man sneered. “The stone belongs to the Serpent’s Eye. As do you. That is the order of things.”

Power flashed at the edge of her vision: a pulse of dark light, a taste of some memory not her own. She remembered her mother’s hand guiding hers, the feel of the stone’s slick surface, the promise whispered in the dark—You are more than you know.

The intruders advanced. Elara’s back touched the cold stone hearth. The whispers surged, and suddenly her skin prickled with prickling heat. The stone pulsed, its energy almost unbearable. An image flickered in her mind: a barrier of shadow, rising up at her command, repelling all who dared come near.

Her knuckles whitened around the stone. The first man lunged, his dagger flashing. Instinct surged—whether hers, or something older speaking with her voice, she didn’t know. The stone blazed, violet fire licking up her wrist, and the world narrowed to the edge of the blade and the quickening power in her blood.

Time slowed. She felt poised on the edge of something cataclysmic, the stone pulling at her, the strangers closing in. Behind the rage and fear, a single, desperate thought demanded control: Choose now. Act, or be lost.

The intruder’s dagger arced toward her heart. The stone’s light erupted, shadow and flame tangling in her grasp. Elara made her choice—into the storm that would decide her fate.

A deafening crack shattered the night. The room erupted in violet light, swallowing everything, their faces, the stone, her own scream. Then, silence—a charged, ringing silence, broken only by the groans of the men, thrown back against the cottage walls. Smoke curled from their cloaks. The dagger lay at Elara’s feet, scorched and harmless.

Breathless, Elara stood among the shards of her old life, the stone in her hand dimmed to a faint pulse. But it was not over. The men, battered and furious, staggered upright, their eyes burning now with something beyond anger—hatred, and the promise of vengeance.

Outside, heavy footsteps approached—more were coming. The lamplight flickered, casting the room into uneasy twilight. Elara’s fingers tightened on the stone. Her heart pounded in her throat. There was no time for doubt or regret. Only for the next move.
