The mars landing

…The static returned, a familiar sound that now carried a new, unsettling undertone. The comms link had gone silent, but the silence felt more profound, more charged than before. I was alone on Mars, the sole human inhabitant of an entire planet. But for the first time since I’d landed, a new, disquieting question began to form in the back of my mind: was I truly the only one listening? The rhythmic pulse, faint as it was, suggested a different answer. A mysterious, distant echo that was slowly, inexorably, making its way across the cosmic void, towards me. The echoes from Earth were fading, and something else was beginning to stir in the Martian silence.
