…I took his hand, my own icy with dread, but my smile remained fixed, a mask of eager anticipation. He led me not towards the attic, or the basement, but towards a narrow, unmarked door tucked away in the back of a seldom-used closet. My heart leaped. This was it. A new territory, a new set of risks, but also, potentially, a new avenue of escape. As he opened the door, revealing a dark, narrow passage, I knew this dangerous dance of deception had just entered its most perilous phase. The illusion of love was my shield, but the reality of his darkness was a constant, chilling threat. And I was walking deeper into it, searching for the exit that I prayed still existed.
