…"You drew this when you were little," she said. "I never knew what to make of it." Nathan stared at the drawing. He had believed the man was a stranger, a liar, a thief. But looking at the scar, the familiar eyes, he understood: the man had been real all along. He just hadn't wanted to remember. "I think I made him up," Nathan said quietly. "To feel less alone." His mother put her hand on his. "You're not alone, Nathan. You never were." He folded the drawing and tucked it into his pocket. Outside, the sun was rising. The school event would start soon, and Owen was waiting. Nathan walked out the door, leaving the empty mirror behind.
