The frequency spiked—high, piercing, transcendent—and her daughter kicked three times in rapid succession, a pattern, a word, a name spoken in a language that existed before language. The harbor lanterns relit. One by one, in sequence, from the breakwater inward, as if a hand were passing over them and lighting each flame with a touch it owned. William stared at the harbor.
