Felt the heartbeat—steady, certain, 140 beats per minute—and beneath it the harmony that was not hers, and beneath that the harmony that was not her daughter's, and beneath that something so old it had no harmony at all, only the low continuous vibration of existence preceding purpose. "You're loud," she whispered to the child. "So loud. What are you saying to them?" The baby kicked. The mark flared. And in the deep, two presences turned toward the sound of a heart that had not yet taken its first breath and began the long, patient journey toward the place where it waited to begin.
