…"Bad dream." "Sea dream?" She considered the distinction. "Yes." His arm tightened fractionally. Then, deliberately, loosened. "Tell me in the morning." "In the morning." He settled back into sleep. She lay awake, listening to his breathing slow and deepen, feeling the mark hum its constant hum against her palm. Outside, the harbor waters lapped at stone. Somewhere beyond the harbor, past the shelf, past the trench, past the closed door and the sleeping First Conduit, something vast moved through the dark. Her daughter's heartbeat kept time beneath her hand. The path was open. The choice waited. And the sea, patient and enormous and old beyond reckoning, was learning a new name.
