…Jack tensed. He rose and moved to the window, peering through the gap in the curtains. A pair of headlights had turned off the main road, pointing directly at the cabin. The engine died. The lights went dark. Linah stood beside him. Her heart hammered. A door opened. Footsteps on gravel. One person, coming closer. Jack’s hand found hers. He squeezed once, then released it. He stepped to the front door, his movements deliberate. A knock sounded. Three sharp raps. Jack didn’t open it. “Who’s there?” A pause. Then a woman’s voice, tight and cold. “Hello, Jack.
