…His grumpiness, that familiar, heavy cloak, felt lighter than it had in years. It wasn't gone entirely, not yet, but it was definitely beginning to fray around the edges, letting in the sunlight of this unexpected, beautiful dream. He felt a stirring of something new, a quiet hope that perhaps, just perhaps, his days wouldn't always be so gray. "Perhaps," he said, a genuine smile finally gracing his lips, "perhaps we could plant some more flowers together, Lily. When this one starts to fade." Lily's eyes sparkled. "I'd love that, Mr. Grumbles!" And as the sparrow chirped merrily from the birdbath, Mr. Grumbles knew that his heart, much like his garden, was beginning to bloom.
