It pulsed once, warm, like a heartbeat. "We should get some sleep," she said. "Tomorrow's going to be a long day." They walked back through the forest, the path shifting behind them, the howl fading into silence. When they reached the edge of the trees, the world looked ordinary again—streetlights, mailboxes, the faint glow of television sets through windows. But nothing felt ordinary anymore. Chloe looked down at her hand. The seed was still there, still glowing. She had a feeling it always would be.
