…"It is a choice," Rowan said. "And now you must make it." The four friends stood in silence, the weight of the tree's branches stretching over them like a promise or a threat. The first two wishes were for survival and return—that much the legends had hinted at. But the third wish... the third wish could be anything. Maya looked at her friends. At Alex, hollow-eyed but standing tall. At Chloe, shaken but steady. At Ben, terrified but refusing to run. "We need to talk," she said. "Privately." Rowan bowed his head and stepped back into the shadows of the tree, leaving them alone in the clearing. "Okay," Ben said, his voice barely a whisper. "What do we wish for?"
