…Stardrift waited, its engines humming. The dark wave had stopped its advance, hovering at the edge of the city, as if waiting to see what they would do. 41 Aris climbed into the ship, TheLuckyAlien beside him. He sat in the pilot’s seat and looked at the stabilizer, its glow steady and warm. “Where to?” he asked. TheLuckyAlien smiled—a quiet, knowing curve. “Wherever the threads lead.” Aris placed his hands on the controls, and the Stardrift lifted off, rising into the bruised twilight. The city fell away, the continent fell away, and soon they were alone in the dark, the stars stretching out before them, infinite and patient. He did not look back. 42
