He drew a breath that sounded like a sob. “You should not have done this,” TheLuckyAlien whispered. 32 “I know.” Lyra’s voice shook. She pressed her palm against his chest, where a faint, steady pulse had begun. “I could not be alone.” He was quiet for a long moment. Then he covered her hand with his own. “Rest,” she said. “Aris does not know yet. We will tell him when the moment is right.” Above them, the Stardrift broke through the clouds toward a waiting world, and in the dark of the chamber a thread that should have been cut held fast. 33
