He turned to Lyra, and in her eyes he saw the stars, the void, the beginning and the end of everything. “I’m ready,” he said. “As long as I’m with you.” She smiled, and the light in her eyes was the only light he needed. They walked together toward the ship’s controls, the sapling’s leaves rustling behind them like a promise. The void stretched ahead, vast and unknowable. But for now, there was only this.
